Juventus striker Fernando Llorente is believed to be interested in securing a move to Arsenal in January in order to enhance his chances of being in the Spain squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, according to reports in the Mirror.
The Spanish international moved to the Italian club in the summer after a frustrating season with Athletic Bilbao who refused to play the striker because he had an agreement in place to move to Juventus and this season too he has found it somewhat difficult to force his way into the starting line up.
The report suggests that Llorente is keen on a January move to Arsenal to help his hopes of representing his country in the World Cup. The 28-year-old Spain international is only now beginning to get a chance at the Turin giants following a summer move, and his advisers are concerned his chances with the national team may be affected if he is not a regular in Serie A.
Arsenal scouted Llorente earlier in the summer and were interested in signing him but he chose to move to Juventus on a free transfer. But the Gunners have reportedly been alerted to his potential availability and any transfer would almost certainly be a loan move as Arsenal look for more long term options and may not want to make a big signing if they are already cup tied for the Champions League.
The Gunners have started the season in excellent fashion but they are short of options when it comes to a central striker. With Giroud being the only decent option available up front there is no doubt that Arsene Wenger might try for another attacker in the January transfer window.
Llorente is an excellent striker and has plenty of experience as he has played 333 games for Athletic Bilbao and scored 118 goals. He also has 22 caps for the Spanish national team. His acquisition would not only improve the depth in the striking department but will also give Wenger a valuable Plan B in the tactical stakes.
I think a loan deal would suit both parties as Llorente wants regular first-team football heading into a World Cup year with Spain and should something happen to Giroud then he would be in with a shout. If Wenger doesn’t want to spend big bucks then the Spaniard would be the best available option.
