Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp believes Mesut Ozil adds something extra to the Gunners and has praised his excellent performances in red and white this season.
Arsene Wenger smashed the club’s transfer record in the summer by acquiring the 25-year-old German star, and he has gone on to be devastating providing a host of assists and even banging in three goals so far.
The attacking midfielder has helped to lift Arsenal to the top of the table as Wenger looks to end the north London club’s silverware drought. Bergkamp feels Ozil add’s the extra bit of quality that has been missing since the departure of Van Persie.
The Dutchman spoke to Absolute Radio’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Football show and said:
If I look at the bench in the beginning of the season, what he has achieved and what he is doing, he is one of those players who can be decisive in a game, who can link up with the midfielder, but with the strikers as well.
And he can provide other players, he can have assists, but he can score goals as well.
He has got lovely vision, so I believe he is one of the sort of players Arsenal have been missing.
They had Van Persie who was a little bit like that, but then you miss someone upfront.
I still believe they could do with another sort of striker, who can score goals, who can score 15/20 goals a season for example. Then they have got quite a good team.
Ozil has been a revelation since his move last month, and scored two well taken goals against Norwich on Saturday. His brilliance on the ball has given others more confidence around him, and it appears Wengerball is finally back with the team seemingly in inspired form- look at the exquisite Wilshere goal.
Bergkamp hit the nail on the head with the German star, he’s added the extra bit of quality that we have needed for some time. Not only on the pitch but also in regards to transfers. Players, especially strikers, are more likely to be taken by the prospect of playing at Arsenal with Ozil spraying around assists.
£42.5 million well spent I think. Agree?
