Arsenal are reportedly planning a move for West Ham defender Winston Reid in the summer, according to reports in Metro.
The 25 year old New Zealand international had a terrific 18 months and was awarded West Ham’s Player of the Season last term and has built upon that form this season which has helped the Hammers to maintain one of the best defensive records in the league, conceding eight goals less than leaders Arsenal.
The Gunners are on the lookout for a central defender with Thomas Vermaelen looking increasingly likely to move out of the club in the January transfer window. The club captain has been on the bench for major parts this season, having failed to make the starting spot his own with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker ahead of him in the pecking order.
The report suggests that Wenger has been tracking the defender for a long time and the 25-year-old has emerged as one of the targets should the Belgian prefer to leave. Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley has given his blessing for Wenger to make a £6 million bid in January after being impressed by the New Zealander. Manchester United and Liverpool are also keen on the player but it is believed that Reid would prefer to remain in London.
Winston Reid was born in North Shore, New Zealand but he started his youth career in the academies of SUB Sonderborg and Midtjylland and at 17 he signed his first professional contract with Danish First Division side Midtjylland and immediately started to get game time. After making a name for himself in Denmark, he moved West Ham in 2010 after a successful World Cup campaign and became an important of their team. He renewed his contract earlier this year which will keep him at Upton Park till 2015.
He stands at 6 ft 3 and he reads the game very well. He is a ball playing defender who is quick, can use both feet, is very composed on the ball and is good in the air. He has a great temperament and is a clean tackler. He also looks dangerous in the attacking third during set pieces.

Hopefully Wenger can convince Vermaelen to stay at the club and I am sure he will get his chance to step in for Mertesacker or Koscielny. If the Belgian does leave Arsenal in January then there is no doubt that we will need to bring in a replacement and Reid does seem a good option to go for as he has Premier League experience and is yet to reach his prime.
