Arsenal are reportedly eyeing Getafe striker Ciprian Marica in January as an alternative, should they fail to land Karim Benzema or Christian Benteke, according to reports in The Metro.
The Gunners are widely expected to strengthen their attacking line over the winter, with Arsene Wenger aware that his side have very little in the way of alternative options to the in-form Olivier Giroud.
The report states that Arsenal are ready to step up their interest in the Romania international in an effort to fend off rivals Tottenham. Spurs were believed to have the inside track on the Getafe forward, according to sources in Spain last week, but it now appears that the Gunners have moved into pole position as they are a more desirable opportunity.
Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Christian Benteke of Aston Villa are two names to have been consistently linked with the London club over the past few weeks, but now Marica has emerged as an alternative.
The Romanian was released by Schalke at the end of last season and only completed a free move to Getafe in September despite rumoured interest from Arsenal and Tottenham.
Marica is a striker of some pedigree, having scored 21 goals for his national team in 61 appearances and has so far notched up 68 goals in 330 games in his playing career at club level. He has spent the last six years in the Bundesliga following spells with Dinamo Bucuresti and Shakhtar Donetsk, played a largely peripheral role at Schalke last season, making 16 appearances in all competitions and scoring six times.
He is normally deployed as a second striker, his goal getting at club level is nothing to write home about but he brings more than goals to the table. He has a wealth of experience and is believed to be available for a fraction of the fee the likes of Benzema and Benteke would command.
He was originally linked to Arsenal back in August, while a free agent having been released by Schalke, with his agent claiming the Gunners were interested. In fact no club moved to sign him before the close of the transfer window and eventually signed for Getafe, and made no comments about being linked to Arsenal.
This might well be one of those rumours created by the over smart media because I don’t see any reason why Wenger would move for him now when they have to pay for him, when they could have signed him for free few months back. I feel the striker we sign this January will probably decide how successful the club will be this season, so it will be best if we go for a tried and tested striker.
The likes of Benzema, Llorente, Lewandowski, Dzeko and Benteke have all been flirted with the Gunners recently, while Demba Ba would be a useful addition too. But for now there is nothing concrete in the works it appears and we will have to wait until January to see Wenger’s hand. One thing is for certain, we won’t be signing Marica.
Which striker should Arsenal sign in January? My preferred option would be Dzeko, a perfect alternative to Giroud. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
