Arsenal are reportedly ready to launch a £22 m move for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema in January, according to reports in Mirror.
The Gunners chief Arsene Wenger has made securing a new forward a priority for the winter window after growing concerned by his side’s reliance on Olivier Giroud.
The report suggests Arsenal are closing in on a £22 million January deal for Benzema as they fear that the Spanish giants are likely to pip them to the £50 million signing of Luis Suarez.
The La Liga giants are keen to snap up the Liverpool striker, but they have to sell in order to fund a deal for the Uruguayan after a lavish summer of spending. Arsenal are also keen on the controversial attacker, but are aware that their domestic rivals are unwilling to let him switch to the Emirates Stadium.
Benzema came in for a fair deal of abuse from his own supporters earlier this season but has experienced an upturn in form in recent weeks, scoring four goals in his past four appearances, but the probable arrival of Suarez will clearly leave the former Lyon man out of Carlo Ancelotti’s lineup.
The Frenchman boasts a more than respectable goal scoring record during his time at both Lyon and Real. He always returns 15+ goals a season which is solid considering CR7 is one a number of regular goalscorers. He has the pace, is a decent dribbler with fantastic ball control which makes him a nightmare for the opposition’s defence. His reputation for his physicality and hold-up play could see him become an asset in the Premier League.
His ability to easily slot into Wenger’s preferred system also makes him an ideal Arsenal transfer candidate. The club have excellent creative midfielders but they are sometimes not clinical enough, as is Giroud. This couldn’t have been more evident against United on Sunday afternoon.
Arsenal’s need to sign another centre forward is pretty clear. Olivier Giroud remains their only proven option in that area forcing the Gunners to bring Nicklas Bendtner back into the first-team fold because of a dearth of striking options at the Emirates. Wenger is a long term admirer of Benzema and may feel now is the right time to bring in the powerful forward to play alongside national team colleague Olivier Giroud.
The deal will again depend on Suarez’s move to Madrid like it happened earlier in the summer in the case of Ozil, but Arsenal did manage to sign the German. So it all comes down to how badly Suarez wants to leave Liverpool and if the Reds are out of contention for the title by January then he could force a move to the La Liga giants.
