Arsenal are considering a move for Basel centre back Fabian Schar after being impressed with his recent displays, according to reports in The Metro.
The Swiss international impressed with his fine Champions League performances this season. The Gunners, who have been tentatively linked with Schar for some time now, are believed to be willing to up their interest after monitoring his performances.
The report states that Arsenal hope they can cash in by winning the race for promising Basle right back Fabian Schar. The defender, who was an intern with a Swiss bank a couple of years ago, turned in a money-spinning performance in Tuesday’s Champions League victory against Chelsea and if he continues to reproduce those high standards then his club will be expecting to cash in when they receive a massive cheque for his services.
The 21 year old has been a regular in Ottmar Hitzfeld’s national team plans this season and is looking forward to playing a part in Switzerland’s World Cup campaign next summer in Brazil. Schar has scored 3 goals in 5 games from defence for the national team.
Schar made his senior debut in the Swiss second tier back in 2009 aged 17 with FC Wil 1900. The following two seasons saw him become a regular at centre half and it was at this time that he showed a propensity to get on the score sheet relatively regularly for a defender. In 2010/11 he scored four times and added a further five in the following season. His impressive performances saw him make the move to Swiss top flight side and Champions League regulars FC Basel in the summer of 2012.

He made his league debut for Basel in September 2012 and did not look back, establishing himself as one of the clubs starting centre-backs. He was part of the team that reached the Europa League semi-finals last season and has remained one of the first names on the team sheet.
He stands at 6 ft 2 in and is a very elegant footballer, who likes to play out from the back and is not afraid to get stuck into challenges. His greatest strengths are composure at the back and on the ball, awareness and dominance in the air. He is a fine example of a modern defender.
With the future of Thomas Vermaelen unclear, the Gunners are thought to be on the lookout for a new defender to provide Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker with adequate cover and I think Schar will be perfect for the Gunners in that role. He is valued at around £5 million by his club which I feel will be bargain considering we will get a International defender with good Champions League experience. He will definitely be an excellent buy if we do manage to sign him.
