Arsenal v Marseille
UEFA Champions League
Kick off: November 26, 2013 7:45 PM BST
Tonight’s game is one most are confident about, as Marseille are yet to get any points on the board in the Champions League. We can’t take them for granted however, as they haven’t necessarily been pushovers in their previous games, scoring twice in their last game against Napoli.
A win is really needed tonight, and while it won’t guarantee us a place in the last sixteen, it will put us in touching distance. We will see where we stand based on the result in the other game obviously, but a win tonight would leave me almost certain of qualification.
We got off to an excellent start, Wilshere was set free down the right, he cut inside and looked for a team mate, but with the goal opening up for him nicely he went for goal instead. He curled it across the face of the goal, past Mandanda and into the top corner, fantastic goal by the young Englishmen.
A few minutes later we looked like doubling our lead, again some great work from Wilshere down the right. He put a ball across goal for a Ramsey tap in but the Welshman hit it straight at the keeper from a few yards out. A wasted opportunity which we haven’t really seen from Aaron this season.
We got another chance to widen the gap late on in the half when Ramsey flicked the ball beautifully over the head of a Marseille defender, he looked away and in the clear, but was fouled cynically. It looked to be just outside the box, but the referee pointed to the spot. After his penalty against Southampton at the weekend, and without Arteta on the pitch, I thought Giroud might be given the spot kick, but Özil stepped up instead. His staggered run up seemed to hinder him more than help him, and the eventual shot was weak and not well placed. Mandanda saved the penalty easily and it was another chance missed.
Marseille barely threatened at all in the first half, but hopefully we won’t end up rueing all our missed chances in the second half. At 1-0 it’s still a very open game, but if we can be a little more clinical we could definitely put 4 or 5 past this Marseille side.
