Arsenal are reportedly considering a January transfer window move for Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov, according to reports in the Daily Mail.
The former Manchester United ace is being linked with a winter exit from Fulham with the Gunners ready to offer him a short-term deal. Arsene Wenger wants some attacking quality to add to Olivier Giroud and the injured Lukas Podolski, and may look to bring the Bulgarian to the Emirates Stadium next month for a minimal fee.
The 32 year old, who has six months left on his Fulham contract, has been in fine form for the Cottagers in their most recent Premier League outings against Tottenham and in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
The striker is almost certain to leave Craven Cottage, with his agent suggesting he wants to depart during the January transfer window, and new Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen insisting he will not block a potential move. He said:
I will never stand in the way of people’s ambitions. He is an immense player that I think any manager would want in his team especially me. He is an immense player, that’s for sure. Any manager in the world would like to have him in their team.
Berbatov is a classy player and has a great track record of scoring in the Premier League. He netted 15 league goals for a mediocre Fulham side last season, and in 2010-11 was among the division’s top scorers with 20 in 32 games for Manchester United.
He has a relaxed style of play and is great to watch when he is on the ball. He is willing to improvise and rely on his instincts, while his strength and ability to hold the ball up with his back to goal are the type of skills we are after. His tricks, flicks and pieces of skill are all carried out with plenty of flair and although he may be 32, he has shown at times in the past year or so that he is still a classy player.
He can still be an effective attacking weapon in the Premier League and represents a potentially high-class addition to any side and would provide suitable cover for Giroud while also offering an imaginative and unpredictable alternative if Arsenal need to unlock a defence. His contract expires in the summer so it would not be a risk for Wenger on a short term deal. It will be difficult to sign big name strikers in January as clubs will be unwilling to let their best players go and he would be a great option if Wenger wants to sign someone on the cheap as he will be available for just £3 million.
