Arsenal are planning a swoop for Everton right back Seamus Coleman should Bacary Sagna refuse to sign a new contract with the Gunners, according to the Sunday People.
Sagna’s current deal expires at the end of the season and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen for the Frenchman to commit for at lessone more year. But the 30 year old is being monitored by Ligue 1 giants PSG and the report suggest he want to move to secure a bumper salary and signing on fee as he approaches the twilight years of his career.
The report also suggests that Wenger will make an ambitious move for Seamus Coleman if Sagna fails to sign a new deal. The 25 year old is a regular for the high-flying Toffees and had a solid outing at Emirates Stadium on Sunday in their 1-1 draw. He recently signed a new long-term deal with the club however and will cost as much as £10 million but Wenger is reportedly impressed by his work rate and has made the defender his first choice replacement for the Frenchman.
He was signed by Everton for just £60,000 from Irish side Sligo Rovers in 2009 and burst into the first team with a Man of the Match performance on his Premier League debut in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham in December 2009. A brief but successful loan spell at Championship side Blackpool followed a few months later before he began asserting himself in David Moyes’ team on the right side of a five man midfield, but was later moved to right back due to his defensive ability.
He has been excellent in at the back so far this season and has also contributed in the attacking third with his overlapping and pressing from the full back position. His focuses on defence first, but is consistently seen bursting down the right wing with impeccable fitness. He is also among the best full backs in England when it comes to crossing.
Sagna has been in great form this season, but if he has made up his mind on leaving then it could be better to sell him in January and bring in Coleman. Everton are unlikely to let him leave on the cheap but Wenger is now not afraid of paying big money if he thinks the player is good enough. He is a great player and he would be a perfect replacement for the Frenchman.
