Arsenal are set to go head to head with Roma in the race for Auxerre striker Paul-Georges Ntep, according to reports in Le 10 Sport.
The 21 year old has been earning rave reviews for his recent performances in the French second tier and has five goals in his last six appearances for the France Under-21 side. He has been hailed as one of his nation’s finest emerging talents.
The youngster has been attracting huge interest from across Europe with Premier League sides Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham all monitoring the French Under-21 international.
The report states that Arsenal and Roma are the leading contenders to sign Ntep, with Auxerre willing to accept a deal in the region of £8.5 million as financial difficulties continue to plague the club. The Gunners are thought to have been alerted by the youngster’s displays, and may be ready to swoop for his signature in January in a bid to bolster Wenger’s attacking options.
Arsenal will face serious opposition in the shape of Roma but the Gunners will have an advantage in this battle as the player recently expressed his own desire to move to the London club, with the starlet having already declared that he is open to a switch to the Emirates Stadium. He said:
Arsenal is a club that trusts young players. But it would all depend on the project.
If it is going to a new club to remain on the bench, what is the improvement? I don’t ask to be in the starting 11 of a big club immediately, but I could help in the not too long-term.
It would be the second time in the space of a year that Arsenal have stolen a young talented striker from Auxerre. Yaya Sanogo was signed on a free transfer in the summer but hasn’t featured for Arsenal since August, having sustained a serious back injury.

He is a natural attacker who has great pace, flair, skill and his versatility as a forward is a huge asset. He also has a remarkably high energy level, and he will relentlessly run at defences time and time again. He is capable of playing with both feet and is very dangerous in the final third. The standard of his crossing has improved significantly since he has switched to the wings more, while he has refined a fine finishing touch when required.
We already have Yaya Sanogo in the squad and it looks unlikely that the Gunners will spend on a starlet who is quite similar to Sanogo in his style of play. Our priority in the January should be to sign a big name striker who could make an instant impact on the side and make a difference in the title race.
