Arsenal have reportedly sent scouts to watch Atletico Madrid star Diego Costa this week ahead of a potential January move for the striker, according to reports in Goal.com.
The Brazilian international has been a revelation this season and has established himself as one of the most feared strikers in European football. He’s scored 17 league goals this season and only Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored as many league goals in Europe, which demonstrates the calibre of the striker.
The report states that the Gunners scouts will travel to Atletico’s two matches this week to run the rule over in-form striker. Arsene Wenger and the Gunners’ chief scout Steve Rowley have identified the Brazilian as a potential January target. Arsenal have already made contact with the player’s representatives about a potential switch to the Emirates Stadium next month.
It further states that scouts have been instructed to assess Costa in Wednesday night’s Copa Del Rey clash against Sant Andreu and Saturday’s La Liga match against Levante, both of which take place at the Vicente Calderon. The 25 year old recently signed a new contract in August which will keep him at the Spanish club until 2018 with a £30 million buyout clause inserted.
Costa is capable of playing through the middle but he prefers to work out on the left wing and run at defenders. He is not only a typical winger, as the attacker has strength and power and is good in the air, as well as not being afraid to track back and put in a tackle. He is well built and tends to drop into the midfield to get the ball and then look to supply to his other fellow forwards.

Olivier Giroud has so far held Wenger’s front line well this season, but after netting 10 goals he is now showing signs of the weariness as a result of his heightened responsibilities and fatigue. Costa has the technical ability to link with the likes of Ozil and Santi Cazorla, he has the pace Giroud does not offer and arguably offers greater all round threat than the former Montpellier man.
The Brazilian will offer Giroud some competition for playing time and might get the best out of the Frenchman as well. However signing Costa would be an incredibly difficult deal to pull off given his importance to Atletico Madrid right now, not to mention the well-known difficulty that exists with luring player’s midway through a campaign. But if Arsenal can somehow bring him to the Emirates then it will be a big boost to their chances of ending the trophy drought.
