Napoli v Arsenal
UEFA Champions League
Stadio San Paolo
Kick off: December 11, 2013 7:45 PM BST
A disappointing end to a disappointing game. 2-0 on the night wasn’t enough to put Napoli through, but Dortmund’s late winner against Marseille means they top the group. A poor second half performance from Arsenal. Here are the player ratings:
Wojciech Szczesny | 7.0: He made a couple of decent stops, but also seemed to switch off at times and made a couple of rash decisions.
Carl Jenkinson | 7.0: Surprisingly well composed, despite being put into trouble by his team mates a couple of times. Got forward well and defended competently.
Laurent Koscielny | 8.0: (MotM) Hands down our best player tonight. Dominated their attackers for most of the game and made a huge amount of vital clearances and interceptions.
Per Mertesacker | 7.5: Was extremely solid in the first half, had a couple of lapses in the the second and was turned by Higuain for the goal.
Kieran Gibbs | 7.25: Was pretty decent both defending and going forward, was caught napping a couple of times, but used his pace to make amends.
Mikel Arteta | 6.0: Arteta was absolutely superb in the first half, showing great experience, drawing fouls, and frustrating the Napoli midfield. He was the polar opposite in the second half, putting Arsenal in an awkward position after getting sent off. In his defence he was pretty unlucky to get a second yellow for the challenge he did, but he shouldn’t have given the referee the option by making the tackle in the first place
Mathieu Flamini | 7.5: Got the balance between attacking and defending right along side Arteta, and sat back and soaked up pressure once our captain saw red.
Mesut Özil | 6.5: Our German record signing was completely anonymous in tonight’s game. He went missing for large parts of the game, and didn’t have the effect he should have.
Santi Cazorla | 6.0: Another very average game from the Spaniard, he just hasn’t found his ‘groove’ this season.
Thomas Rosicky | 7.0: Rosicky wasn’t much better than Cazorla or Özil, but he certainly put in more of an effort than his team mates.
Olivier Giroud | 7.5: Once again his hold up play was vital and effective, but once again his finishing was lacking.
Aaron Ramsey | 7.0: Did pretty well after he came on, put a good ball through to Giroud who should have done better.
Nacho Monreal | 7.0: Helped out defensively, which is exactly what he was put on to do.
