The Gunners moved back to the top of the table thanks to a 3-1 win over West Ham United on Boxing Day. Lukas Podolski’s cameo appearance inspired Arsenal to victory at Upton Park as the Germany international set up Walcott’s second goal and fired home a third himself on his return to action from a hamstring injury.
The German International feels the North Londoners need to strengthen their squad in the mid season transfer window after losing Aaron Ramsey to a thigh injury.
Speaking to the Arsenal official website, he said:
We need the right additions. We said that a lot in the summer then Mesut Ozil came.
But at this time, in a very special period that only happens in England, you need to get the right additions with players who come back from injury.
We lost Aaron Ramsey [against West Ham] so a good player is maybe out for two or three weeks so we need the right additions now. We have a good squad and that’s going to be vital in the next couple of weeks.
During the game we always believed in our strengths. We want to go on another good run so at the minute we are really proud we are really proud that we came back today and it shows our character.
The Gunners have been in great form so far this season, but Wenger will still have to improve his squad in the January transfer window if Arsenal want to continue their run of form in search of silverware on all fronts.
Olivier Giroud has led the line extremely well this season but Wenger’s over reliance on the Frenchman has already started to show its holes, with the Frenchman entering a barren patch of late, having not scored in his last seven outings. We should add a striker who will complement Giroud in the attack.
Arsenal have been linked with a number of strikers who can do this namely Martinez, Benzema and Diego Costa, a move for any of them would be a big statement.
Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have formed a centre back partnership that Wenger will undoubtedly have become pleased with of late but competition is never a bad thing and the club could do with another figure in defence capable of imposing himself on the pair but not necessarily demanding first team football.
Bacary Sagna and Tomas Rosicky are currently in the final year of their contracts and are an important of the team, so if we can manage to keep them and strengthen in the aforementioned areas then we will have a good chance of ending the trophy drought.
