Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has insisted that the Gunners must be prepared to beat the best teams in Europe if they want to win the Champions League.
The Gunners were pitted against Bayern Munich in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition for the second season running after Monday’s draw.
The England international has admitted that he is relishing the prospect of another glamorous Champions League tie against the champions.
Speaking to the Arsenal official website, he said:
You see the likes of the Barcelonas and Real Madrids and you always want to play against them and obviously Bayern Munich too.
We managed to get a good result away at Bayern last season so that brings back good memories. If you’re going to do well in the competition you’ve got to beat the best teams.
Obviously the big teams create the bigger atmosphere around the stadiums.
I remember before I came to Arsenal I was at the Barcelona game at the Emirates and I just remember the atmosphere there was unbelievable, so when the big teams do come into town it does create a massive buzz.
Many will see the draw as the Gunners paying a very high price for losing the last group game against Napoli. The loss meant we qualified second in the group behind Borussia Dortmund and inevitably would face a group winner.
Both teams met in the Champions League last season with Arsenal losing out on the away goal rule. The Gunners lost 3-1 in the home leg before beating the German side 2-0 at the Allianz Arena. However we have an improved squad this season, better than the team that almost knocked out Bayern Munich last year.
The Gunners have beaten the two major teams in Germany on their own turf, a feat hardly achieved by any team and if things go well and the Gunners can get a good result at home then anything can happen. There will be some fears but to be the best you have got to beat the best especially in the quest for the Champions League.
There is no denying the fact that we have an excellent team but it would help if we can strengthen our attack by adding a striker in January before facing the German giants. A player such as Karim Benzema or Diego Costa would be a dream come true.
