The England international netted twice to put his side in front with Lukas Podolski adding a third after Carlton Cole had given the home side the lead.
The 24 year old insists that he was delighted to see Arsenal return to the top of the Premier League but feels the league will be very tough to win.
Speaking to BT Sport, he said:
From our disappointing results in the last few games it’s nice to get a good positive away win.
It’s great to be top but it’s going to be a very tough league this year, everyone is very tight, a lot of people are taking a lot of points off each other so we’ve just got to make sure we look after ourselves.
I think we’ve been criticised of late for not scoring many goals.
When you go 1-0 down you need to have a positive reaction and all the guys reacted in a great way.
I missed a chance in the first half I should have buried and I know because I set high standards for myself but you need to put those things out of your mind and luckily we managed to fight on.
The guys showed great character to come back from that.
The Gunners who have been winless in four matches but responded to criticism and a West Ham goal by coming back from behind at Upton Park. After a goalless first half, West Ham took advantage within one minute through Carlton Cole’s finish after Wojciech Szczesny spilled a shot.
After the goal Arsenal grew progressively more desperate, but couldn’t convert their chances. But Walcott somehow managed to get one past West Ham goalkeeper Adrian just before the 70th minute. Thereafter, Arsenal could not be stopped as Englishman added a second from a header and Lukas Podolski added a sumptuous third on his return from injury.
Arsenal showed a lot of character in coming back from that position and a huge credit should be given to Podolski who returned to action with a bang and it was this pedigree from the bench that Wenger has missed in the past few months. Hopefully they can build on this performance.
In the end it was a win which showed some real character and put the Arsenal back on top of the table. Next up are Newcastle away on Sunday and a victory will mean we will be top of the table going into the New Year.
