Which trophy shall we go for? by AR
The undoing of so many great teams over the past has been the “too many fingers, in too many pies” type of scenario – where the team runs out of steam at the final hurdle in multiple competitions and ends up winning nothing.
This sort of thing has been well documented in the past and squad rotation overcomes a lot of the problems. Also, Arsene Wenger has traditionally treated the League Cup, in particular, as something of a testing ground for the youngsters, so that hasn’t tended to affect us too badly.
But this season, we’re currently in the happy position of being top of the league and looking odds-on to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League – and the FA Cup hasn’t even started for us yet.
Now whilst we all love the FA Cup – that’s the one you’d strike off the list if you absolutely had to – which leaves the Champions League and Premier League.
At the moment, although we’re top – we’re still only second favourites with Betfair at 3-1 to win the Premier League. Now this is probably the most accurate site to look at for a real market as it’s the largest exchange in the world, so is kind of a purer market than more traditional bookmakers.
Betfair’s odds for the Premier still have Man City around 2-1 favourites. But when you look at the odds with Betfair for the Champions League – we’re eighth favourites at 19-1. This may look like value, but when you think about Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and others – you’d have to say that – though we can beat anyone on our day – we’re most probably not going to be lifting that particular trophy in Lisbon next May.
So which trophy shall we go for Arsene?
For me it’s obvious; please let’s go all out for the Premier League, one game at a time – and don’t worry quite as much about the others; that would keep all us Gooners happy! Arsenal have a strong squad so we can look at rotating for the Cup games but play our outright best XI in the Premiership.
