The Draxler saga continues for the Gunners with another member of the Schalke hierarchy refusing to rule out their prized asset.
The Bundesliga side’s sporting director Horst Heldt admitted they are calm over the situation but would not ‘exclude’ anything this window, sparking more rumours that a move can happen this winter window.
Reports all over the show have been suggesting a deal is close despite Wenger flatly denying he is in for the highly rated youngster, with Schalke believed to be pushing for the £37million release fee that will come into play this summer.
Before Schalke’s Bundesliga match against Hamburg on Sunday, Heldt reportedly said (quote from Metro):
I can’t exclude anything, I don’t know what other clubs are planning. I only know what happens in our club – and nothing happens at the moment, so we don’t bother with this.
We are very calm with this thing.
The Gunners are in need for some attacking reinforcements and Draxler has been earmarked as a potential signing to inject even more depth into the attacking midfield and wide positions, while eventually developing into a centre forward similarly to Van Persie.
His physical attributes suggest he could be a viable candidate for a striking role, however he’s not quite the finished-article-signing we need this winter. But adding fresh talent into the squad will inject even more quality into Arsenal’s squad and hopefully help towards the Gunners title push.
In other transfer news, Gooners will be gutted to hear reports suggesting that Chelsea are closing in on striking target Diego Costa ahead of a proposed summer move.
The Atletico Madrid star has been in scintillating form this season netting 19 goals in just 20 appearances in La Liga, aiding his sides attempts to overhaul Barcelona and Real Madrid’s stranglehold on the Spanish league title.
According to the report by the Metro (yes, not the most reliable source), Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reached a verbal agreement to meet Costa’s £32m release clause ahead of a summer transfer of the Brazilian-born striker which could involve on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the deal, a player Atletico are dead keen to hold onto.
Arsenal fans have been desperately hoping Wenger would make advances for the star striker even though a winter move remained highly unlikely. However the Gunners will struggle in a bidding war with their London rivals if indeed this report is to be believed.
Chelsea will be a real force with a centre forward of Costa’s caliber. Perhaps Wenger could lure Lukaku to Emirates should he seek a move away from his parent club?
