There is no argument that Carlos Vela is extremely talented and it is no wonder he is excelling in Spain but he was always doomed to fail at Arsenal. Wenger knew the gem he had in his team when he bought him. He said he was the most natural finisher he had ever seen and was determined to see him play for Arsenal. Unfortunately Wenger was a man under pressure. His team had not won anything in a while and he needed to find the players that would deliver now and not those for the future.
Vela also had Van Persie ahead of him in the striker position and Theo Walcott was preferred on the right wing. He often found himself on the bench and as a result, his confidence left him and he looked lost when on the pitch. It didn’t help when the fans turned against him, the same fans who are now blaming Wenger for letting him go. He was terrified of been given the ball as he did not want to mess up and hear the boos ring out.
When he was sent on loan to Real Sociedad, he began to get the game time he craved and performed admirably. Unfortunately, so was Theo Walcott and AOC. He knew his game time would be limited and so did Wenger. They both did the best thing for Carlos Vela and he was sold to Real Sociedad. Credit to him for been voted La Liga’s best player for December ahead of Messi and Ronaldo.
Carlos Vela is destined for big things. As a winger his pace can cause all kinds of problems and he works hard for the team but he will have too many players ahead of him in the pecking order. As a striker he is a natural finisher but his movement around the box is suspect and he cannot hold the ball like Giroud. An improved player, he is bound to flourish in another team. Unfortunately it won’t be Arsenal.
In my opinion, Vela will flourish as a second striker in a 4-4-2 system where he can play off a player like Drogba. If he plays in this position, he would very easily end up as top scorer with his finishing ability. It is amazing the flak Wenger will continue to receive for letting such a player go from the fans who didn’t want him in the first place.
