An “Exclusive” article in the Daily Star today (10th February ’14) claims both Bacary Sagna and Luckaz Fabianski have turned down new deals at Arsenal and are set to move on to pastures new at the end of the season. This story was later picked up by the Independent and the Express.
The Star stated that:
…it has emerged that right-back Sagna and goalkeeper Fabianski – who are out of contract at the end of the season – have turned down new deals.
Seven major clubs, including title rivals Chelsea and Manchester City, are keen on signing Sagna on a free – and the France star has told team-mates he is off.
The Star goes on to say that:
Megabucks Monaco are willing to pay £120,000-a-week AFTER tax for three years along with a signing on fee of £10m spread over that period.
Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Galatasaray are also keen on the defender, who has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season.
The offices of the Star must smell like old McDonald’s Farm yard. What a load of Bull!
It’s very possible that Bacary Sagna may leave Arsenal at the end of the season if Arsenal haven’t offered him a good deal. If this is the case I will say and rightly so and best of luck to him. Sagna has been a good and loyal servant to the club and deserves a good deal to see out his career.
But who are these “team-mates” that he has supposedly told that he’s off? Are they similar people to “Club-insiders” or the other old reliable “close friends”?
And who from Monaco told the Star the details of a possible contract offer? £120,000-a-week AFTER tax for three years along with a signing on fee of £10m spread over that period. That’s more than Edison Cavani earns at PSG!
ESPN has quoted Arsne Wenger as saying regarding Sagna’s contract situation, that he expects Sagna to stay:
When I say I expect, it’s more that I want [him to stay].
I hope that in the end I am right. We are not close at the moment.
He wants to keep his options open, because he is at the end of a contract. It is an important contract for him. He is 31 years old. I can understand.
I believe that what ESPN has quoted is the true situation and I think, by the sounds of it, Sanga will go and this is a real shame. I honestly hope that I’m wrong.
Reading between the lines, I think that he has already agreed to move and if it was a foreign club, he could have made a pre-agreement with them and we’d have heard of it, but we’ve heard nothing. So something tells me that he will go to a Premiership rival and I believe that rival to be Manchester United. If that is the case, then somebody’s head should roll.
Wenger also said previously that he expected Na$ari and Van Per$ie to sign and we all know how those ones worked out.
We recently reported Fabianski as saying:
I want to be No.1 in the club and in the Polish national team. I have learned a lot at London during very positive and challenging periods.
With biggest respect to this great club, I didn’t accept the extension offer as I am looking forward to a new challenge in England or abroad.
That’s understandable and at 28 Fabianski needs to be playing regular first team football. I wish him luck in his career.
If it is the case that Sagna’s on the move then I only hope that Arsenal move early to get in an adequate replacement for him. Republic of Ireland and Everton Right-Full, Seamus Coleman, would be my idea of a good signing, as he reminds me a little of Lee Dixon in his style of play.
My comment on the Barry rumour – the price is right so it’s possible!
