Mathieu Flamini has praised the Gunners exceptional start to their Champions League loss against Bayern Munich, and is confident they can overcome the two-goal deficit if they can repeat their high intensity start from Wednesday night.
Arsenal applied plenty of pressure to the reigning European champions in the opening period, winning a penalty after just eight minutes. They failed to convert from the spot and missed several promising chances but can take positives from putting Bayern on the back foot.
The loss of Szczesny meant the Gunners were forced to defend and sit back. They managed to keep the Bundesliga leaders out for a decent spell with ten men and Flamini praised his team mates for battling hard to the final whistle.
The Frenchman feels his side possess the potential to get back in the tie when they visit Munich in a fortnights time. He told Arsenal’s official website :
Everything is possible. We hope we can go over there and play a big game with the same [first] 20 minutes that we did here.
We need to continue our high pressing and try to score early in the game. I’m very proud for the performance of my team-mates because it was not easy, especially playing 10 v 11 against a team like Bayern.
We started very well, we were pressing very high and we were creating opportunities so that was positive.
Everyone gave everything until the last minute. Anyway now we have to focus on the next leg.
Not everyone gave everything judging by his spat with record signing Mesut Ozil. The two can be seen clashing in the video clip below, with the German appearing lethargic during the second half and failed to get anything going. His relaxed and sometimes moody look seemed to piss Flamini off.
Flamini vs Ozil spat:
The defensive midfielder battled hard and was a big miss over the last couple weeks. He commands his players and while he may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we need characters that demand passion and every drip of sweat from their team mates.
The loss was certainly a blow to our confidence, especially after the second goal late on. But now we must regroup and focus on getting more points on the board in the league this Saturday.
