Wenger was spot on when, responding to a question, he referred to the invincibles in the 03-04 season. That season, Arsenal were in the Champions league playing a Chelsea team managed by Ranieri having won all the games against them in the league and FA cup. They also faced Manchester United in the FA cup semi final and Liverpool in the Premier League. They lost to Man U in the FA cup, a few days later lost the second leg to Chelsea in the Champions League and by the time they were facing Liverpool the next weekend, they were facing the real possibility of ending the season empty handed.
During the game against Liverpool, we turned to the one man we could always rely on. Thierry Henry! Not only did he deliver the Premier League that afternoon but propelled us to an unbeaten season to boot.
This season, we are facing the same situation. We face Liverpool on Sunday in the FA cup, and Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday after already playing some tough games in the Premier League. Difference is, if we can negotiate past Liverpool and Bayern Munich, we are not facing a tough team in the Premier League but one struggling in the form of Sunderland.
We do not have a striker like Thierry Henry to fall back on however but Olivier Giroud who is a hit and miss this season. It would be amazing if we can do a double or treble with the amazing bunch of players we have yet it would be heartbreaking if we end up with nothing. If we approach every game as a final from here to the end of the season, we can win everything but our players need to come together and support each other more than ever.
Our fans need to support the team through every loss and win. If we lose against Liverpool and we turn against the team, forget about winning against Bayern and of course our season crumbles proving our rivals right.
This season we have a chance to make things right. Every one of our players is ready to step up and be counted. Wenger was right to refer to the 03-04 season and be wary of this season.
Who knows we might win the treble…or end up with nothing!
