Lukas Podolski has brushed off claims he was offered as part of a deal to lure Schalke starlet Julian Draxler to north London.
The 20-year-old playmaker has been heavily linked with the Gunners since the summer, with rumours heating up again to new levels in January. The young German international has been in contact with his compatriot Podolski, however a possibility for a one-way deal is still up in the air.
There were reports suggesting Arsenal were willing to use Podolski as part of the package however the German attacker denied any such trade was in the offing during the winter window.
Podolski reportedly said:
Every top player is of interest to Arsenal – and Draxler is certainly one of those. But I do not know what the [club bosses] are planning.
I am in contact with Julian. He is a great guy. But we haven’t spoken about any transfer.
I only know that a swap deal involving me and him was never a consideration.
Poldi has struggled to hold down a starting spot this season, however he spent a large portion on the treatment table and the form of others has seen him restricted from regular action.
The forward has enjoyed a decent run in the side of late, starting in games against Bayern, Stoke and Sunderland. He demonstrated his class with a powerful finish against his former side and has proven to be a valuable member of the dressing room.
A swap deal should not be an option for the Gunners, we have the money to spend while Podolski is player we need to keep. Keeping the strong German contingent in the squad will help lure Draxler in the summer. We need all the fire power we can get next season.
