Tottenham v Arsenal
Barclays Premier League
White Hart Lane
Kick off: March 16, 2014 4.00 PM BST
An unbelievable start and an unbelievable goal, but we were on the back foot for most of the 90 minutes. Set up for the counter, but not making the most of our possession when we were on the ball. Rosicky’s world beater and a resolute defence gave us the win. Here are the player ratings:
- [Match Highlights] Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle – All The Highlights & Best Bits
- [Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle – Ozil Wonder Goal Saves Boring, Boring Arsenal
- [Confirmed Lineups] Arsenal v Newcastle United – Wilshere & Lacazette Start In 4-2-3-1
Wojciech Szczesny | 5.5: Woj had very little to do for most of the game, but when he was called upon he didn’t look confident. He made a couple of decent saves in the second half, and punched away a few corners and crosses. He almost gifted Tottenham an equaliser twice in a matter of seconds, rescued twice by his centre backs.
Bacary Sagna | 7.5: Bac was unlucky to be booked early on for a good challenge Danny Rose, the card restricted his defensive tackles for the rest of the game. Arsenal were forced into their own half for most of the game, Sagna unable to have any impact in attack.
Per Mertesacker | 8.0: An outstanding game from the Mertscielny partnership, despite Adebayor playing aggressively between the two. Mert got his head on absolutely everything, and made some vital blocks.
Laurent Koscielny | 8.5: (MotM) An outstanding performance from the French centre back. Under the cosh for 90 minutes, but dealt superbly with any and all threats Tottenham applied. Kosc made a couple of vital blocks on the line, and was alert to everything.
Keiran Gibbs | 7.25: Wasn’t able to get forward as much as he normally does, and was caught out of position on occasions. Defended decently when required, just like Sagna was restricted by a first half yellow.
Mikel Arteta | 7.0: Solid for most of the game, started to tire a bit towards the end of the game, his passing beginning to go a little wayward.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain | 7.5: Again it was a case of the good and the bad from Chambo. Assisted Rosicky for the goal, and was our greatest outlet for a lot of the game with his fantastic dribbling and strength on the ball. He was however, very wasteful on a couple of occasions, spurning a fantastic one-on-one chance to put us 2-0 up.
Santi Cazorla | 5.5: Really quiet game from Santi, practically a ghost at times. His passing was way off for most of the game, and I felt he should have been subbed.
Tomas Rosicky | 7.25: Tomas scored an absolute stunner of a goal, giving Arsenal the lead after just a minute of play. He worked hard in midfield, and was unlucky to be subbed midway through the second half.
Lukas Podolski | 7.0: Podolski really came to life at times, making great forward runs, and almost grabbing himself a goal. He is not the kind of player who can do things on his own however, and he wasn’t getting the service.
Olivier Giroud | 5.5: Struggled with a lack of service, but didn’t make the most of the ball when he did get it.
Mathieu Flamini | 7.0: With the way we were playing, Flamini was a vital presence on the field. With the amount of defensive work we were doing, he really added that grit in front of the defence.
Nacho Monreal | 6.5: I didn’t think he was the right substitute, just forcing us further onto the back foot, really impacting our ability to counter and get forward.
Thomas Vermaelen | N/A: A brief spell on the pitch for our Captain after an apparent Chambo injury. Again pushed us back even further, but added more in the box and defensively than Monreal.
