The wait is finally over and the 2nd leg has arrived. Most have written off this tie as a formality and that is what Arsenal need. No pressure on them and all the reason to perform. One of the games people are looking at is the game last season against the same opponents that helped boost our confidence for the rest of the season.
I would prefer to look at our energy withing the first fifteen minutes of the first leg this season when we outplayed Bayern and they could not live with our intensity and if we had scored that penalty, we would have blown them away. If we go with that same mentality, we have every chance of winning this game.
Another game that Arsenal can draw motivation from is the second leg of the Champions League tie in 2004 against Inter Milan. That was one of the strongest sides Arsenal have ever played. The first leg was a nightmare. Obafemi Martins, before he came back to torture us in the final with Birmingham, was as quick as lightning and we just could not live with his pace. The celebrations didn’t help and by the time their third goal entered, Arsenal were a spent force. There was no way of getting mad. We were just way out of our league.
I didn’t watch the second leg that day because I could not stand another humiliation. My friend did and went to sleep by the 70th minute when it was 1-1 and found out the next morning it was 5-1 to the Arsenal. That was unbelievable and the day I realized that with this team anything is possible. Now no matter how much people say we are out of our depth, I just remember that day and know nothing is impossible with this team. I have a sneaking suspicion we are going to qualify and stay on course for the treble. Don’t write us off just yet.
