Wojciech Szczesny has lifted the lid on the reason behind the “selfie” he took with team mates after their battling 1-0 North London Derby away win, it has since exploded over various social media platforms.
The Gunners goalkeeper asked for his phone in the aftermath of the win and snapped a picture celebrating with Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski in front of the visiting fans.
The photograph made headlines and for Szczesny it was all about paying back the support to the many Gooners tuned in and in attendance.
Szczesny told Arsenal Player:
I asked Paul Johnson [our equipment manager] to bring my phone on to the pitch after the game and grabbed a selfie with the Arsenal fans, which was brilliant.
They were fantastic all afternoon. They sang their hearts out and I am sure they enjoyed themselves. It was fantastic for us too and we wanted to give something back to them.
The Poland international paid testament to Arsenal’s defensive resilience after they sat back thanks to an early lead handed to them by a stunning second minute Tomas Rosicky strike.
The Gunners finished the tie with three centre backs as Thomas Vermaelen joined the fantastic Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Despite a tense second half, Arsenal claimed a vital clean sheet and victory.
It has been that way away from home sometimes. We concentrated on defending.
They did not create any chances and the only one they did have [from Nacer Chadli] I pretty much gifted them.
We were fantastic defensively. We scored early so they were always going to dominate the possession. But the two centre backs were outstanding then Thomas Vermaelen came on and we played with three centre back. He did well as well.
Overall it was a huge win for us. We knew that Chelsea had dropped points against Villa and we have to take advantage of that. It was very pleasing to get a win at White Hart Lane after quite a few years.
The Gunners had failed to win in their last five attempts at White Hart Lane, while their victory over Everton in the FA Cup plus a positive performance to draw in Munich will help prepare them for their upcoming trip to Stamford Bridge.
If Arsenal can maintain their defensive resilience and be clinical in front of goal when opportunities present themselves then it’s not inconceivable that we can get maximum points against the likes of the Blues and Man City over the next month.
The back line were superb while the midfielders certainly put a shift in. Between them Mertesacker and Kosciely made an incredible 35 clearances – that stat alone is testament to the hard work the duo put in and the amount of attempts the Gunners thwarted without conceding.
