After the loss to Stoke City, it’s time for Arsenal to go back to the drawing board and come back stronger. Even at this late juncture of the season, we don’t seem to be aware of our strongest midfield line up. It’s a given that Arteta and Flamini will occupy one of the defensive mid positions but what about the rest?
No one seems to know Wilshere’s midfield position. He is a good dribbler but usually fails with his final ball. He seems to flounder on the wings and his favourite positions on the field are usually taken up by more creative players. In time he can be given a Messi role but has a long way to go before that can happen.
Rosicky, the great accelerator, is very creative, tenacious in the tackle, and can speed up a game, if and when need be. The problem is, as he himself admitted, he has had to curtail his attacking prowess due to the number of midfielders that like to attack. If we were to reduce the number of attacking midfielders on the pitch and give Rosicky free reign, i have no doubt we would be more decisive in our play and score more goals.
That Ozil is a gifted player is not in doubt. Much has been made of his temperament but I do not think that is the issue. Ozil is a player who likes to create and give though balls to players to do damage in the opposition area. However, he is been played with players with the same attributes as him. The result? No one to pass the ball to. Against Napoli earlier in the season, he was devastating creating chance after chance for Ramsey who made the runs he likes. He needs players like Chamberlain and Walcott and Ramsey.
Ramsey is a box to box midfielder who runs himself to the ground playing for the team. He knows when to make runs into the box and runs back to protect the back four. He has learnt how to play on the wings and the best thing? His attributes mean that he can play with any of our players.
Carzola seems to have made the left side of our attack his own. However he has not been very effective of late. He seems to play well with Wilshere and Rosicky in the team where he can drift in and out at will creating a flowing movement but seems subdued when he has to stick to the left.
Chamberlain has provided us with another option with his pace and finishing. He needs to be in the first team without a doubt especially on the right. In the centre he has also played quite well. He is an outlet that our creative players need to use and with him in the team, we are guaranteed goals.
Gnabry is another option with hiss pace and dribbling. However, his inexperience counts against him. In terms of his attributes, he is a direct replica of Chamberlain.Pace is what this Arsenal team is lacking at the moment. Maybe its time we take a chance on him.
Podolski is one who has been overlooked by Wenger for longest time with good reason. When he starts a game, he has a tendency of drifting out of a game for long periods. When he comes in as a sub and there is a feel good factor in the team, then he performs well. With his blistering shot, he is an extremely potent goal threat. It just depends on which Podolski shows up.
We have extremely gifted midfielders. The problem is which combination to use. We need to solve this problem and fast if we are to salvage our season.
