Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla believes that the Gunners are in need of significant reinforcements in the summer if they are to challenge for the title next season.
The Gunners have seen their title hopes disintegrate after a run of just one win in six top-flight outings dropped them down into fourth place in table.
The 29 year old, who signed a new contract with the Gunners last month, also admitted he is likely to leave Arsenal if the club continues to miss out on silverware.
According to the Guardian, he said:
Arsenal has everything to win. History, infrastructure, an incredible stadium and great players. But we have to improve at crucial moments and sign the best football players because if you don’t do that, you may lag behind others.
That is what makes it different at other clubs. You’ve a good example in Manchester City who signed Fernandiho, (Alvaro) Negredo… or even Manchester United with (Robin) Van Persie and (Juan) Mata.
Arsenal know what they need next season, but it’s almost impossible to win a title if we haven’t got these kind of things.
I want titles and that is why I came to Arsenal. Every football player wants to win titles. We’ve gone many years without winning one. And if not, what I’ll look for in my next destination is to have the chance to win.
I don’t want to close doors, but nowadays I’ve a contract with Arsenal for two more seasons. When I’m turning 31 I’ll evaluate myself and I’ll choose the best option. In which case, I would be delighted to come back [to Spain].
Wenger is and has always been an economist and he always prefers giving his young players a chance to play first team football. However this approach has left Arsenal behind in terms of the quality of players they have signed in recent years.
The Gunners splashed out £42 million on Mesut Ozil last summer, but that was very much against the grain of Wenger’s spending habits in recent years. The Frenchman’s stubbornness has seen his team tumble down the Premier League table from top to fourth in the last few months. Had he brought in some quality players in January to add the required depth, then Arsenal would have still been fighting for the title.
The Gunners reportedly have a big transfer kitty for the summer, as they are in a very healthy financial position. Wenger has ensured that the Gunners have stayed financially viable in recent years and now is the right time to loosen the purse strings, otherwise we will lose our star players over the next couple of seasons.
