Lukas Podolski has cast serious doubt over his long term future with Arsenal after he vented his frustration at being consistently substituted to The Telegraph.
The Germany international has completed 90 minutes just twice this season for the Gunners, and was openly frustrated at being substituted after just 68 minutes of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win against Wigan Athletic.
Wenger opted to pull off the left winger in a bid to find a much needed equalizer, however the Arsenal faithful shared the view of Podolski and boos rang around the stadium at the decision to take off Arsenal’s most lethal finisher.
Podolski told reporters when asked if he is finding his playing situation frustrating:
Of course. I play and, in the last games, I always come out and of course you cannot be happy when you always go out after 60, 70 minutes. Of course I am not happy always to be substituted.
It’s the decision of the boss. It’s not always easy when you play for a big club but of course I am not happy to always come out and watch from outside. You cannot be happy with this situation.
Wenger has been ruthlessly harsh with Podolski at times, however of late he has been a regular starter with injuries decimating the squad. But mainly due to his fitness levels which are not has high as the likes of Cazorla, he is the go-to player to make way to freshen up the left wing.
The German can be a very important player for the club, he’s clinical and has a hell of a left boot but he’s never going to be a first team regular playing week in, week out at Arsenal.
If the Gunners do sign someone in the mould of Julian Draxler then it’s quite possible this will his last season in north London. It will be a shame to lose a player of his calibre and ability, but it’s difficult to see his situation improving. Judging by his quotes he’s probably had enough after a disjointed season for the experienced German.
Do you think Wenger should play Podolski for full 90 minute stints to attempt to keep him, or off load him this summer? Share your thoughts below..
