We have got a massive summer ahead of us. For the first time in nearly two decades, we are unsure who will be our manager come next summer. If Arsene leaves then I fear for the board, they are so reliant on him and may be unprepared for his exit. Looking at Man United and how they got it horribly wrong, it makes you feel less confident. Do Arsenal have the right men in charge to find Arsene Wenger’s successor? Will the new man spend the transfer chest shrewdly or is he capable of managing Arsenal like Wenger did for most of his tenure? That is for another day.
Having said that if Arsenal win the FA cup and our annual fourth place race, I genuinely believe Wenger will extend his contract. No one except Wenger knows and everything will be clear come May17. I personally want him to stay.
Moving on to the team, we need a few additions to the core. Our squad needs strengthening and no second thoughts about it. Our starting XI is a match for any side and it is the squad that needs augmentation. More importantly, we shouldn’t lose any players. Last year we didn’t lose any and that was evident in our start to the season.
Most have extended their stay, but Sagna’s future is unclear and Wenger confirmed of the impasse in his prematch press conference:
At the moment they are not progressing. We know what we want from him, he knows what is on the table and that’s where we are. The ball is not in our camp anymore, it is in his camp, and he needs to come back to us.
Rumours are that we are in for Southampton’s right back Calum Chambers, I would happily take him as an addition but replacement, I am not sure.
According to reports, Arsenal are in search for a big name striker, midfield general, winger, defender and goalkeeper. I am not sure we are gonna throw the money or even strengthen in all the mentioned areas. We may go big for a striker (Benzema and Mandzukic are the names thrown around) and possibly a winger but all others I am expecting Wengerish signings- free, French, technically good, 18 years old.
This season is a stark reminder to us that we don’t have the squad to go the distance. Injuries, fixture list have all taken their toll and we have suffered as result. It’s surprising that we lost players in a position where literally we are well stocked- midfield. Ramsey, Ozil, Wilshere and Walcott (ok he is not a midfielder) all missed huge chunks of the season and the Hull game was a testament to our regrets and what ifs. What if Ramsey wasn’t injured, what if Walcott’s knee was just a little stronger, what if Ozil didn’t pull his hamstring, what if they were all playing together at Anfield or Stamford Bridge? These questions will never be answered.
However we must not repeat the same mistake this time around. Make an Ozilesque signing, get players in early, let them have a proper preseason, gel in with the squad and let’s start the new season positively. Hopefully next time we can win the title or atleast stay in the hunt till May.
What if Chelsea lost Hazard, Liverpool lost Suarez, City lost Toure? What if Arsenal bought Messi? pffff
