Arsenal have confirmed their spot in next season’s Champions League after Everton fell to Manchester City 3-2 on Saturday.
The Gunners successful progression ensures an 17th consecutive appearance in Europe’s elite competition and the news was confirmed by the Premier League’s official Twitter feed.
Everton’s defeat to Man City means Arsenal have secured qualification for the Champions League for a 17th successive year.
Two goals from Edin Dzeko and another from Sergio Aguero ensured a 3-2 victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s men to help cement their status as title favourites, while the Toffees now sit four points behind Arsenal with just one game to play.
It wasn’t much of a battle this year as the past couple of seasons, but the chances of qualifying looked bleak when Everton demolished the North London outfit 3-0 at Goodison Park. However, the Gunners got back on track with four wins on the bounce coupled with the Toffees loss of form made it smooth sailing for Arsenal. Wenger will be pleased with his team’s ability to overcome an embarrassing loss to the Merseyside club.
The North London club can go into May 17th’s FA Cup final without the pressure of needing results and this provides the perfect opportunity to rest key players and get them ready for the big final. The Gunners have come close to winning the Champions League without ever securing the trophy, it still remains the clubs holy grail heading into next term.
Hopefully the confirmation of Champions League football will give manager Arsene Wenger license to go out in the transfer market this summer to again boost his squad options.
