The director has confirmed that the board have given Wenger the go-ahead to spend significant funds in the summer and claims they could easily break the club’s record transfer fee in the process.
According to the Evening Standard, he said:
We want to win the Premier League and the Champions League. If we buy two or three players then I think we can. We want to win. We don’t want to be second, we don’t want to be third and we don’t want to be fourth.
We will support Arsene with the players he wants to buy. He has always been encouraged to spend.
Asked if Arsenal could exceed the £42.5 million fee spent on Mesut Ozil last summer, he added:
We would. It would be easy.
There is a lot of paper talk. I wouldn’t say it [the total transfer budget] is £100m, I wouldn’t say it’s £50m and I wouldn’t say it’s £150m.
If Arsene has asked for any player then we have always backed him to go and buy. With the exception of Messi, Ronaldo or Bale; we could buy most players.
Wenger has always been reluctant to spend all the funds available to him, but this summer could be very different. Arsenal have progressed well this season, but it wasn’t enough to go all the way in the League and there might be significant changes to the squad come next season.
The Gunners primary focus will surely be acquiring a goal scorer to supplement Olivier Giroud, as he is currently the only credible option at centre-forward. They also need a goalkeeper, a new first-choice right-back and centre-back to accommodate the departures of Fabianski, Sagna and Vermaelen.
The list doesn’t end there as Arsenal should also seriously contemplate replacing the aging legs of Mikel Arteta. Wenger is left with quite a shopping list and with the board suggesting they are ready to spend it’s over to the manager now. It’s time to break the habit of a decade and bring back the glory days.
