Arsenal fans may react differently to the news that Carlos Vela may be returning to the Emirates this summer. The Metro has reported that Arsenal are looking to sign Vela. The Mexican joined Arsenal from the Guadalajara youth team in November 2005 for a modest fee of £550,000. During his spell with the club, which spanned 7 years in total including four loan deals, the young forward appeared to show promising signs of establishing himself in Arsenal’s starting eleven. However, he left permanently for Spain in 2012, and that was that.
However, as reported by the Metro, Vela could be, as they put it ‘coming home.’ They report that Wenger will look to make the move during pre-season, with it being a win-win situation as if Vela doesn’t prove to be a success this time around, he will be sold on with a big profit, with Atletico Madrid and Valencia allegedly interested.
Here are three reasons why Vela will benefit Arsenal
One – Price
One area that will particularly attract notorious penny pincher Arsene Wenger is the price in which the front-man would cost to bring to Arsenal. Due to a clause in the contract which was put in place when Arsenal sold him to Real Sociedad he has a £3,000,000 release clause if Arsenal bid for him, while any other club would have to meet his other clause of £30,000,000. It is a known fact that Arsenal will need to strengthen other areas such as defensive midfielder and, if Sagna does leave, right back (see my previous article). By signing Vela, we would have plenty of money to spend on other players – whether Wenger would want to spend that money is a different story.
Two – Versatility
According to whoscored.com Carlos Vela has played in a variety of roles for Sociedad this season. He has played on the right-wing in a 4-3-3, as a right-sided attacking midfielder and in the whole behind the forward in a 4-2-3-1, as well as leading the line himself. This kind of versatility isn’t something to be snuffed at. With the injuries we have had this season, a versatile forward could come in handy if we experienced the same kind of crisis next year.
Three – Style of Play
I am a big fan of Giroud. His hold up play, intelligent flicks and passes, physical presence and decent finishing inside the area are crucial to the way that Arsenal play. However Arsenal do miss the bursting forward runs made by the likes of Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie. Carlos Vela will bring us that. He has pace, trickery and is a fantastic dribbler, making him the complete package for a forward. Not only that, he is an elite finisher. This youtube video shows off the best of Vela’s skills and his style of play. He also seems like he would perfectly fit our style of play, as he is adapted to quick passing style that is in place at Arsenal as well as Sociedad, this no doubt down to his early years of working with Arsene Wenger.
To conclude, the news of possibly resigning Vela will divide Arsenal fans, as he is, after all, not the superstar Arsenal fans want to see signing for Arsenal this summer. That being said, I would be very happy to see the 25-year-old back at Arsenal this year, providing another forward this summer, hopefully Loic Remy – the pacey French forward would combine well with Vela or Giroud and boasts experience in the Premier League.
