After a roller-coaster of a season, which included some awful moments, such as taking a few beatings away to our biggest foes, but also some fantastic moments that brought tears to the eyes of many Arsenal fans, including some of the greatest performances ever under the reign of Arsene Wenger such as the Champions League victories over Napoli and Borussia Dortmund, as well as finally ending our nine year trophy drought, coming from 2-0 down to beat Hull City 3-2. It is of course natural that as fans we begin to look towards the summer transfer window with great excitement. None of us are under any illusions that Arsenal do not need to strengthen this season, with even French star Laurent Koscielny stating Arsenal need four signings. Last summer, it was a complete fiasco and we really set an example of how not to conduct their transfer dealings. Although Flamini was a tidy bit of business, and Sanogo will go on to be an Arsenal star, it wasn’t until the last day of the season when a signing of the calibre we expected made their way to the Emirates did. That signing of course was Mesut Ozil. We definitely do not want a repeat of that this year, and hopefully a signing or two will be announced for us before the World Cup is over. It is therefore excellent news that Arsenal are looking to make some signings early. The Express has reported that Arsenal are looking to take advantage of Mauricio Pochettino leaving Southampton for the less desirable end of North London by raiding Saint Mary’s for not one, not two but THREE, yes three players! The article states that Wenger is making Morgan Scheiderlin his top priority this summer. This is totally understandable, as a defensive midfielder really is an area we cannot afford to mess about with this window. Schneiderlin is a fantastic player and one who would significantly improve our squad in his position. Arteta has done a sturdy job but isn’t up to being our first choice any more, and Flamini is a more than adequate replacement but isn’t one of the best in his position. That is where Schneiderlin comes in. The 24-year-old has recently been called up to represent his country following injuries taking their toll on Les Bleus, and it is hard to understand why he wasn’t taken in the first place. He is a star in the Southampton team and is crucial to their high pressing style. This season he has made 68 interceptions, won 87 tackles and won 61% of his aerial duels, all more impressive than current Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta. He has also completed 89% of his passes. The statistics prove he would be an excellent addition to the Arsenal midfield. It also appears that Arsene Wenger is going to be heading south in order to solve our right back dilemma. Southampton have two young right-backs, Nathaniel Clyne and Calum Chambers. Both are young and have excellent amounts of potential. The article states that Arsenal scouts have been watching Chambers, the younger of the pair, for the whole season. It is said that they have some doubts regarding his defensive ability but I’m sure that Wenger will be able to iron out any creases. How do you Gooners feel at the thought of Arsenal signing a few Southampton players?
