Arsenal have reportedly made a bid to bring in Sao Paolo defender Rodrigo Caio to the Emirates, according to reports in the Metro.
The 20 year old is one of Brazil’s highly-rated young centre-backs and has even shone at the recent Toulon Tournament where he was named the best player of the competition.
The report states that the Gunners watched the defender recently in France and have submitted a formal offer for the player, thought to be about £7 million.
It further states that chief scout Steve Rowley has already held a meeting with his agent Jorge Mendes that went well and the club are now waiting on an answer from Sao Paulo.
The Gunners are a little short in defence after the departure of Sagna and they now have only three senior centre-backs in the squad. There are some doubts over Vermaelen’s future with reports recently linking him to Manchester United and even if the captain stays put, Wenger will be keen to add a youthful addition to his defensive line.
He is a central defender, but he does have the ability to step forward into a defensive midfield slot, similar to former Gunner Gilberto Silva. He is a good tackler and knows how to position himself very well on the field, making it difficult for opponents to counter attack. He even played as a winger showing a lot of quality in his passes, crosses and positioning. In defence, he appears to anticipate the ball well and is decent in the air.

The North London club could offer the centre back the platform he desired and his versatility means that he could also play in midfield at the Emirates moving forward. He would go into the first-team squad if a deal were to be completed, however he might struggle to gain a work permit initially, but Wenger will be hopeful that they can force one through for the talented starlet.
