Balotelli has been touted as a potential target for the Gunners as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season.
However, Smith feels that Balotelli wouldn’t be a good fit for the North London club and insisted Mandzukic would be a much safer bet than the former Man City striker.
According to Talk Sport, he said:
Balotelli doesn’t strike me as an Arsene Wenger sort of player. He’s someone who commands the headlines and there’s always something going on with him off the field.
He’s a great player on his day but, for me, he doesn’t have enough of them. I just can’t see him at Arsenal.
Wenger will be bringing in a striker this summer, hopefully a very good one. There are a few out there at the moment, just look at the likes of Mandzukic. But Balotelli? I don’t think so.
Mandzukic’s future has been thrown into doubt after Bayern confirmed the summer arrival of Robert Lewandowski. The 28 year old, who will lead the Croatia attack during the upcoming World Cup finals in Brazil, scored 18 goals in 21 league starts last term but after being left out of the squad for the German Cup final thanks to a feud with Pep Guardiola, appears likely to leave the club this summer.
He is one of Europe’s best players in his position, and would be perfect for Arsenal’s system. He is an efficient, versatile striker as he can play through the center, which is his primary position, but also on both wings. He stands at 6 ft 2 in and can operate in limited space inside the box.
The Croatia international is big aerial threat, while he’s still decent with the ball at his feet and technical enough to play in a deeper role if needed.
He possesses similar aerial ability and hold-up play to Olivier Giroud, but with a more polished overall technique. His signing would be a real statement of intent, while Wenger can also guarantee the player plenty of goal-scoring opportunities with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere in the same team.
Balotelli’s antics are well documented and while his talent is not in question, the constant on/off-field problems will give a manager like Wenger something to worry about. So Mandzukic looks the better option, as he would also give the team a lift instead of creating unnecessary mess like the Italian.
