The Mexican International left the Gunners in 2012 after failing to secure consistent first team football opportunities and has since garnered a fearsome reputation in Spain. While he was leaving, Wenger insisted on adding a buyback clause in his contract that will allow the Gunners to re-sign the striker for a fixed fee of just £3.2 million.
Sociedad chief Jokin Aperribay has revealed that he has been informed that Arsene Wenger will be activating the buy-black clause in Vela’s contract. He said:
Arsenal have informed us that Vela would be with them next season.
The 25 year old enjoyed a magnificent campaign last term, scoring 16 goals and grabbing 12 assists in 34 appearances, and when asked about the possibility of a return to London last month, Vela said:
Arsenal gave me the opportunity to come to Europe when I was 17. I didn’t have as many opportunities as I expected and I had to try new options.
If I have to return to London, I will try to make things in a different way so what happened in the past won’t be repeated again.
Vela previously joined Arsenal in 2005 but suffered limited chances throughout his Emirates tenure. However he has maintained impressive scoring form across three seasons with Sociedad, notching up 41 and 28 assists in 106 La Liga appearances for the Basque club.
He is predominantly a striker, but he’s equally capable of operating on the wing. He will be great option to have on the bench as a backup for Giroud, who looked in need of a rest towards the end of March. His finishing has improved and his fitness record is also impeccable. He’s definitely come on a lot since he left Arsenal, as a player, especially with his decision making and movement.
He would make a good signing for the Gunners and for £3.2 million he could make a great squad player. He would provide a different option, being able to play anywhere along the front line and could turn out to be a masterstroke if he adapts well which is the main worry. If Arsenal can sign another big name striker along with Vela then our striking department will be good to go next season.
