Arsenal’s interest in Porto striker Jackson Martinez has been confirmed by the players agent, however the Gunners face a battle with a host of other top European clubs for the prolific centre forward.
The 27-year-old, who is set to line up for Columbia this summer in the FIFA World Cup, has netted an impressive 60 goals in 91 games for Porto and has been linked with the Gunners for sometime who clearly need a prolific, quick centre forward to compliment and compete with Olivier Giroud.
A potential £30 million summer move has been mooted, with Martinez’s representatives having confirmed they are due to undergo talks with the Portuguese outfit to discuss the future of the striker.
Arsenal have been mentioned among the likes of Manchester United, as well as La Liga sides Atletico Madrid and Valencia, to have registered their interest in the Colombian. It appears it will take a bid of around the €25-30m mark, according to his agent who is set to undergo talks with the Porto boss.
Martinez’s representative Peppino Tirri told Corriere Giallorosso:
I am waiting for Jackson Martinez’s manager, Henrique Pompeio, to arrive in Italy tonight for a series of transfer meetings we’ll have together.
It’s true, he will fly in tonight because we have some encounters to evaluate and find the right proposal for Jackson Martinez.
We’ve got meetings set up with numerous European clubs, as he is of interest to Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal and Valencia, but also important Italian sides.
We believe Porto will happily do with a sum between €25m and €30m.
The quick forward has been linked with Arsenal since last summer, then again so have most of the Europe’s reasonably decent strikers. The Gunners need a different option to Olivier Giroud and Martinez could be an interesting option.
Although I haven’t seen too much of him at Porto, will provide a report on the lad during the World Cup shortly. I’m set to watch the Colombia v Japan match soon so will get to see him in the flesh.
His goal scoring record isn’t half bad, so could be worth a punt. Personally I’d prefer Vela and a Mandzukic. What are your thoughts Gooners?
