Well, I made my feelings pretty clear about what I would do if one Cesc Fabregas was available for £30m – No question. Buy him. However, reports that Arsenal have informed Barcelona that they do not wish to exercise their buy-back option, suggest that Arsene Wenger is of a different opinion.
Although Cesc was keen on a return, apparently Arsenal “are not seeking a creative midfielder”. Now leaving aside the obvious comparison that Arsenal were probably “not seeking a crippled midfielder” in January, but bought one, I still don’t think the fact that he isn’t a priority should be a reason not to buy him. It certainly hasn’t prevented Arsene purchasing midfielders previously.
In fact, as recently as last summer, when our requirement for a top class striker and a defensive midfielder was exactly the same as it is now, the club did exactly that, with the purchase of Özil. That was still a good buy though, and so, I believe would Cesc have been.
I would really love to believe that the decision is based on certainty by the club that they have the deals in place to secure exactly what is required and it uses up all the budget. Let’s say for the sake of argument; a £10m right back, a £15m defensive midfielder, a £10m goalkeeper and two strikers £20 – 25m and £35 – 40m, would we be happy? Well, assuming one of the strikers isn’t Balotelli, hell, yes.
But recent evidence clouds that belief somewhat. How would last season have panned out if we had got Higuain, who was nailed on until Arsene got miffed and pulled out because they wanted a bit more money at the close? Or if we had bid what Suarez was worth, rather than trying to be “clever” and open negotiation by seriously pissing off the potential vendors with £1 over his release clause?
We ended up having to compete in four competitions with Giroud, Peter Crouches less co-ordinated twin, and a useless [email protected] If the transfer window closes and Arsenal have “only” spent £70m all the “Wenger out” weaponry will be loaded and cocked, ready for any dropped points. Heaven forfend that should be against a Chelsea team including Fabregas.
