Arsene Wenger has claimed the rumours linking Mario Balotelli with the Gunners are ‘pure invention’ despite reports heating up over the controversial strikers future away from AC Milan.
Arsenal are in desperate need to secure the signature of a big name striker this summer, with Balotelli becoming the latest in a long line of centre forwards linked with the club. According to some previous reports, Wenger was even set to meet the players agent while in Brazil this month.
The Arsenal boss is in South America participating in beIN Sport’s World Cup show, and when posed the question of whether he is chasing the AC Milan star, he replied:
No. No, that’s pure invention.
We cannot believe absolutely everything that is on internet or is in newspapers.
Sometimes it’s created by agents or by press who needs news. But in that case, it’s not true.
The 23-year-old Italy international has just been knocked out of the World Cup and will no doubt be on the hunt for a new club with AC Milan likely to offload him to reduce their wage bill and look for a more efficient option up front.
Wenger has been known to deny any rumours in the past, however it seems unlikely we will end up submitting a bid for the controversial striker. The former Manchester City forward has been too inconsistent and has yet to realize his immense potential despite spending a number of years at the top with big clubs.
It would appear to be a risky move for the Gunners, you never know what you get with Balotelli. Colombia’s Porto striker Jackson Martinez should perhaps be more of a priority, after seeing him in the flesh last night against Japan, the powerful centre forward certainly impressed me with his high work rate, pace and composure.
