Arsenal has been linked with so many transfer targets, it is hard to keep track of all of them. However, it is good to keep an eye on them as well as those already on our roster to see how they perform.
Players Arsenal should definitely have:
(1) Antoine Griezmann:
I was not sure if the hype surrounding the player was hogwash but after watching him I can say for certain he is the real deal! He is much more than just a mere winger. He does not just use his speed but actually has a footballing brain so to speak. He has incisive passes, can dribble, is not afraid to head the ball, and can spot a run even before it happens. He is a real star in the making.
(2) Joel Campbell:
Thankfully he is already an Arsenal player and will get his chance to play for us next season. I have to admit I have not watched much of him but what I saw when he played against Uruguay impressed me…and the whole Arsenal fan base. Goals aside, he has the poise, unbelievable first touch reminiscent of a certain Thierry Henry, dribble effortlessly past challenges, can deliver a through ball as well as anyone and I still have yet to see the famed burst of speed which he kept to a minimum.
Already at 21 years he is starting to show maturity well beyond his years which is understandable considering the fact that he is Costa Rica’s focal point of attack. One has to be mature mentally to handle such a responsibility.
(3) Mario Ballotelli:
Proving me wrong every day and showing how he matured as a player and a person under Prandelli’s tutelage. He is calmer and does not react hastily to situations to the detriment of his team. No one really doubted his talent and we can all mention his attributes…the strength to hold off defenders, speed, finishing prowess, link up play etc. He still tends to go missing in games which he has to work on to have a bigger impact in games. The world cup is his stage and he is lapping up the limelight.
Players we should avoid:
(1) Iker Casillas:
Casillas still has a lot to offer and his reflex saves are next to none. However, Jose Mourinho really did a number on him. Mourinho, by dumping Casillas abruptly, Spain and Real Madrid’s undisputed number one, in favour of Diego Lopez, a goalkeeper who will probably never play a game for Spain has probably caused irreversible damage to Casillas psyche. He will keep second guessing himself and wondering if he deserves to be part of the Spain team hence the mistakes he is making.
If there is one person who can bring the best out of Casillas, it would be Wenger but that would hinder Szczesny’s progress.
(2) Edison Cavani:
I have always said Cavani is overrated and I am sticking to that. He is selfish, trying to score at impossible angles when a pass would have been an obvious choice, gets easily frustrated and is not a team player who links up with his teammates well. It is easy to say he was never going to bench Ibrahimovic at club level but what about when a 21 year old in the form of Joel Campbell outshines him? He has a few group games in the World cup to prove me wrong but I am not holding my breath.
Players still being watched:
Promising but still has to prove his defensive game.
