Arsenal fans have little to worry about the reported interest in vice-captain Mikel Arteta, with Fiorentina’s pursuit expected to result in a dead end according to the players agent.
The 32-year-old has one more year left on his current terms and is an integral member of Arsene Wenger’s squad that ended their nine year wait for a trophy last season with their FA Cup win.
The Spaniard attracted interest from Athletic Bilbao recently, and despite his representative Inaki Ibanez denying any departure, Fiorentina have emerged as potential suitors.
Arteta’s agent has again reaffirmed he is an Arsenal player and will not be departing the club this summer.
He told Radio Blu:
I haven’t heard from any clubs. What are the chances of him leaving? He’s the captain of Arsenal, he is an Arsenal player and he’s happy here.
Arteta has started to age as seen in patches last season, but still has at least one more year in him at the top level. He’s been invaluable since his arrival from Everton in 2011, and when fit, is an automatic selection in the deeper midfield role.
The Gunners are in need for an exciting defensive midfielder this summer with the likes of Sami Khedira and Lars Bender mooted as potential targets. The arrival of one of the two would certainly knock Arteta down the pecking order in time, but would not push him out of the club. However this needs to happen with the Spanish midfielders aging legs starting to demonstrate his diminishing pace.
The rumours from Fiorentina and Bilbao are most likely fabricated by the players agent to keep Arsenal on their toes and potentially offer Arteta a new deal. So nothing really to worry about just yet Gooners.
