The Gunners are on the lookout for a right-back after losing French defender Bacary Sagna to Manchester City on a Bosman free transfer at the end of last season.
The 28 year old has been heavily linked with the Gunners in the past couple of weeks and some reports earlier in the day stated that the two clubs had agreed a fee in the region of £8 million for Debuchy and the player is set to undergo medical in the next couple of days.
Now the player himself has confirmed that he will be joining the Londoners following France’s World Cup quarter-final elimination at the hands of Germany on Friday evening. He said:
Yes, I will be joining Arsenal for next season.
The Frenchman last night confirmed his move to Arsenal by posting ‘Bonjour Arsenal’ attached to a picture on his Instagram account. The defender is now expected to return to England from Brazil to undergo a medical at the Emirates Stadium and tie up a deal before enjoying a summer holiday following his World Cup exertions.
Toulouse and Ivory Coast star Serge Aurier has been linked with the Gunners for a long time and his move to the Emirates looked imminent, but nothing has happened since and it seems Wenger has decided on Debuchy as a lot safer option to replace Sagna.
The £8 million fee seems like an excellent deal for a player of his quality and with 18 months Premier League experience under his belt, he knows what English football is all about. The Gunners already have Carl Jenkinson and Hector Bellerin as right-back options, but both are still young and the signing of Debuchy will provide some experience in that position.
The move isn’t yet confirmed by Arsenal or Newcastle officially but it’s only a matter of time before the deal will be announced.
