The Spanish outfit have been in the market for a Diego Costa replacement who left the La Liga champions for Chelsea this summer, and they have all but sealed the signing of Croatia international Mandzukic.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with the centre forward, who spent two successful seasons with the back-to-back Bundesliga champions, netting 47 goals during his time there. But the Gunners have recently shown a strong interest in Alexis Sanchez to bolster their attacking options, with rumours cooling on any Mandzukic move of late.
The Bavarians have now confirmed the deal is imminent to see the 28-year-old head to the Estadio Vicente Calderon, with sporting director Matthias Sammer revealing at a news conference:
We’ve reached an verbal agreement with Atletico, and Mario Mandzukic has also reached a verbal agreement. So, even with nothing signed yet, I can all but confirm the transfer.
It may well have been a blow for the Gunners had the intense interest in Sanchez not made the Chilean our number one attacking target for the summer. Mandzukic has been prolific in Bundesliga over the past few seasons and has proved he can score in the big games – the type of centre forward we need to compete with Giroud.
The Croatian is of a similar mould to our Frenchman however, so it is no real surprise that Wenger did not follow up on any reported initial interest in the player. If we can seal Sanchez then we certainly haven’t missed out.
