Chile international, Alexis Sanchez, officially became an Arsenal player just moments ago, signing for an undisclosed fee on a long term contract. The Sanchez saga has been anything but a secret for a long time now, but Arsenal fans will be relieved to see it finally in writing on the Arsenal site.
The 25 year old has joined from FC Barcelona where he notched up an impressive 39 goals in 88 appearances, not to mention providing a number of assists for his team mates at the Catalan club. Returning from a relatively successful World Cup, Sanchez helped his side qualify from a group containing semi finalists, the Netherlands, and last year’s champions, Spain.
The transfer wasn’t without it’s ups and downs, with both Juventus and Liverpool allegedly interested in the Chilean’s signature. Arsenal always looked like front runners though, and Arsene Wenger appears to have had a huge impact on his decision; the French manager apparently meeting personally with him in Brazil to convince him he would be happy in North London.
“As many people have seen during the World Cup this summer, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted that he is joining us at Arsenal Football Club.” Arsene said. “Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks. He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad. I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club.”
The Arsenal manager clearly worked hard to bring him to the Emirates, and he looks to be exactly what the Gunners have been missing recently. Sanchez certainly has the potential to be the missing piece of the puzzle for Arsene Wenger’s side, and Arsenal fans will be hoping he can hit the ground running.
“I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy.” Sanchez said.
The new Arsenal forward underwent a medical today, and will join up with his fellow Gunners at the end of July after a much needed holiday. The Chilean will no doubt make his first appearance for Arsenal at the Emirates Cup in August, Arsenal fans will be waiting with baited breath before then.
