Arsenal have officially confirmed the acquisition of France international Mathieu Debuchy on a long-term contract from Newcastle United.
The announcement was expected to be made today after weeks knowing of the inevitable transfer. The 28-year-old right back comes in as a direct replacement for the departed Bacary Sagna, and adds plenty of Premier League experience.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised his second senior signing of the summer:
We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France.
He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us.
The former Newcastle fullback featured 46 times for the Magpies during an 18-month spell since his move from French outfit Lille, where he earned a call-up for the France national team and played in the Champions League.
Debuchy shared some words and is delighted to have earned a switch to the Gunners, he said:
I’m very proud to be joining a great club like Arsenal and to wear its colours, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the whole world.
I’m looking forward to working with Arsène Wenger and to helping the team build on last season’s FA Cup success. Playing again in the Champions League is a big excitement for me and I will do my best to help Arsenal compete for trophies.
Debuchy is expected to join up with his new team-mates soon and could play in August’s Emirates Cup pre-season tournament.
Welcome to the club Mathieu! A great signing.
