The feeling of a big name signing is highly infectious, calling Mesut Ozil our own last summer was inspiring and now Alexis Sanchez has recreated the optimism ahead of the new season.
There is no wonder the Chile international is stealing the Arsenal headlines at present, and now he’s given his first interview with the club along with a host of players and Ivan Gazidis expressing their delight over the Chilean’s signing.
The acquisition of Ozil has certainly become the catalyst for future signings as we had hoped. It demonstrates we can shop in the top bracket again and top quality players want to join us. Sanchez feels the squad is strong enough to challenge for the title with names such as the German No10 sprinkled into the mix and is excited to link up with his new team mates and boss Arsene Wenger.
With [Mesut] Ozil in the squad Arsenal were [close] to winning the league title. I hope I can make a contribution so we can win as many titles as possible.
We have a great squad and we are a big club. We can achieve big things.
Playing regularly wasn’t the only reason why I came here. I came here to win the league title, the Champions League and every title at stake.
Arsene Wenger’s style of play is the sort of style the Chilean national team has. Therefore I am used to it. Arsenal plays very well, which fits my style. That’s why I moved here.
I was told that he is a manager you can learn a lot with. He wants to achieve great things in football and that helped me make the decision to sign for Arsenal.
I am certainly glad to be the first Chilean ever playing for Arsenal. I will do my best to achieve every possible thing with the club.
I love the sound of ‘we’ have a great squad and ‘we’ are a big club – it’s very exciting to have another quick forward in the mix to compliment Theo.
Ivan Gazidis expressed his delight on Arsenal’s official website, hailing the acquisition as a step forward for the club. He shared the fans delight of bringing in another top class signing for the second consecutive summer, something the attack needed.
The chief executive said:
It is fantastic, that’s what this is all about – making sure the club progresses and that we make our fans happy and proud.
It is a brilliant feeling when we are bringing players in and winning trophies.
We have been really clear, we will only bring in players who can really add to the squad and we do think he is world class. He is a great signing for us.
It is a great step, and takes us one step closer to where we want to be.
Some of the Arsenal players have taken to Twitter to welcome the new signing too.
Mesut Ozil wrote:
welcome to @Arsenal #AlexisSanchez – you definitely have chosen the right club! #COYG #AFC #SanchezSigns.
Theo Walcott mentioned:
What a Signing!!!!! Can not wait and looking forward to playing with Alexis Sanchez!!!!! #COYG.
And Mikel Arteta stated:
Welcome to the #Arsenalfamily Alexis!!What a great signing that is!!#StrongerTogether.
Arteta has also given an interview with Arsenal’s official website, where he praised Sanchez as the type of player we were looking for in the market and matches the clubs and players ambitions.
The vice captain said:
I’m delighted. He’s the type of player we were looking for.
At some stage [last season] we didn’t have that pace up front with the injuries we had, but this year we will. We will be a threat in behind teams and he’ll give us another option.
He’s a character, too. He’s a fighter and very ambitious. I think he’s the type of player that the Arsenal fans will really like.
It is a very good statement to show where we are going. I think we are going in the right direction, the club is ambitious, the directors are ambitious and we are going to fight for big aims.
The FA Cup was good but not enough and we want to improve on that.
Exciting times Gooners, exciting times. The 25-year-old will have a chance to link up with the squad for pre-season when he returns from his holiday and will hopefully have plenty of time to embed himself into the squad ahead of the new campaign. He has the best years of his career ahead, a solid signing.
Welcome to Arsenal, Alexis.
