New York Red Bulls have announced Arsenal’s traveling squad via their official site, and there are a couple of surprises.
The Gunners are due to face Thierry Henry’s side on Saturday as they step up their pre-season intensity with the upcoming Emirates Cup and Community shield clashes on the horizon.
Arsene Wenger has selected a squad similar to that which defeated Boreham Wood 2-0 last weekend, however there is just one striker making the trip in the form of Chuba Akpom.
Here is the squad list:
Damien Martinez, Wojciech Szczesny
Hector Bellerin, Kieran Gibbs, Isaac Hayden, Carl Jenkinson, Ignasi Miquel, Nacho Monreal
Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Kristoffer Olsson, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky, Jon Toral, Jack Wilshere, Gedion Zelalem
There are limited options for Wenger in central defence and up front, but it provides the likes of Hayden, Miquel and Akpom a perfect opportunity to impress and stake a claim for inclusion into his first team squad for the season.
Yaya Sanogo and Benik Afobe are missing up front, for the former it is likely a precautionary exclusion due to injury or something, and for Afobe he may well be in the process of securing a move permanently away from the club. That’s just a guess. It’s unlikely he will really make it at the club with a number of other forwards in the pecking order despite his early promise.
Alex Oxlade-chamberlain has only just returned to full training, and after his injury woes over the last few months there is no sense in rushing him back for the friendly. Should be an interesting match, hopefully we can see some exciting stuff from our exciting young talents.
