The Chilean international has been one of the star performers in the World Cup and joined the Gunners on a long term contract following lengthy contract negotiations between Arsenal and Barcelona. Liverpool and Juventus were also keen on Sanchez, but it is thought he preferred a move to the Gunners as he favoured living in the capital.
The French manager believes the acquisition of Sanchez is a shrewd one and believes the forward is a ‘modern’ striker. While speaking to Euro Sport he said:
As many people have seen during the World Cup this summer, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted that he is joining us at Arsenal.
Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks. He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad.
I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club.
Sanchez possesses a low centre of gravity and quick change of pace as well as a tenacious edge, making him tailor-made for the demands of the English game. He will work the channels in the way Olivier Giroud is unable to, representing a significant step up in quality in the attacking options at the Emirates. His versatility is one of his greatest strengths and will give Wenger huge flexibility when it comes to selecting his attack.
The Chilean’s signing is a big statement in the Gunners push to be Premier League champions. When Walcott suffered a season-ending injury, it was seen as a huge blow to the promising title chance and it proved to be that, as the team lacked creativity, pace and running in behind to trouble teams. Sanchez will not only bring the pace and creative ability, but also an outstanding work-rate.

The addition of Sanchez will add a considerable amount of depth to an already strong looking squad. He can play as a striker but it is thought that the Chilean’s best position is on the wing and on the right wing in particular. His arrival will most likely have a positive effect on the rest of the squad like the rejuvenated feel at the Emirates when Ozil joined last summer. Sanchez along with the imminent arrival of Debuchy, is certainly a commendable start in what should be a busy window for the club.
Next up – a defensive midfielder please!
