According to ESPN, Arsenal are among a host of clubs interested in Colombia star Ramadel Falcao in what is believed to be a very expensive loan deal worth €20million.
The former Atletico Madrid star is earning mega bucks with Ligue 1 side Monaco and has grown unhappy with the French outfit not to mention the club themselves seeking to lower their wage bill.
The Gunners are in the market for a new centre forward to compete with Olivier Giroud, and now that the Frenchman is out injured until late December at least, Wenger has no more excuses but to dip into the transfers scene once again for a striker.
Reports are suggesting Real Madrid lead the pack for Falcao with Chelsea, Juventus and Arsenal all stating their interest. Monaco are hoping to get around the €20 million mark for a season long loan for the 28-year-old.
Style of Play:
Falcao is a prolific centre forward who is known for his power and strength in the air. The Colombian is solid on the ball and likes to bring his team mates into play as a conventional target man but can work the space and score goals out of nothing.
Despite being just 5ft 10 he possesses an impressive leap and is strong in the air as Arsenal saw first hand in the Emirates Cup. With pace and skill to boot, Falcao justifies the huge price tag as one of those rare all round central strikers.
The forward has started the season in France with a bang with two goals in three games for Monaco. But it’s when we look further back that your jaw starts to drop. Certainly nine goals in 17 games last season from 49 shots is nothing too amazing, but it was a seasons ravaged by a serious ACL injury. With Atletico however he managed 34 and 36 goals in all competitions (most notably 12 in Europe for their successful 2011/12 season). And let’s not forget he was banging in 30+ goals a season with Porto.
A definition of a goal machine.
Should we Buy?
When quizzed on whether Falcao was within their price bracket, Wenger replied “No”. But a loan deal is something different entirely and could be an interesting option.
The €20m hopefully involved wages. So that’s approximately €250,000 (£200,000) a week plus a €7.0m fee say for one season. Bloody extortionate really. But realistically do we have any better options? There is talk of Welbeck (denied by Wenger) and Remy but both hardly improve us.
Edison Cavani is another option but he too will be in the similar price bracket as Falcao. It seems a little like playing FIFA this transfer window, but if we really want to compete with Chelsea and City we need a player of Falcao’s ability.
Do you think we should pay €20million for the Colombia for one season? Especially after he spent most of last campaign on the treatment table? Maybe there should be an injury clause in there somewhere. Share your thoughts below..
