Arsenal have reportedly been handed a big boost in their pursuit of Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic, according to reports in the Metro.
The Gunners are on the look-out for a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen as the Belgian international is expected to leave after losing his place as a first team regular.
The report states that the Serbian international is thought to be top of Arsene Wenger’s list of replacements for the departing Thomas Vermaelen. The Premier League champions want to sell Nastasic to the highest bidder after making him surplus to requirements.
It further states that City would also consider allowing him to leave on-loan with a view to permanent deal, if interested parties had doubts over his injury problems. Arsenal have been tracking Nastasic since he was 16 and would have to move quickly to wrap up the deal, with Juventus, Galatasaray and Inter Milan are also thought to be keen on him.
The 21 year old was something of a revelation at Manchester City after joining from Fiorentina in 2012, as he fitted into the set-up seamlessly. However, he spent the vast majority of last season on the treatment table and struggled to displace Kompany when he returned.
Key Statistics : via WhoScored
Nastasic made 13 League appearances last season, averaging 90.8 percent pass completion across all competitions, even going as high as 91.9 percent in the league. He is averaging 46.5 passes per league game last term, which is almost double to that of what Vermaelen averaged.
Should we Buy?
Nastasic presents the ideal long term solution at the back for Arsenal, as the Serbian is young enough to play the role of understudy but talented to give an immediate impact when called upon. His injury problems would be a concern but there’s no doubt he’s a huge talent, so if we could keep him fit he’d be an excellent third choice option for the club.
